The WOW factor!

Category: Local

RAISING more than £1,500 has certainly achieved the WOW factor for Colchester and Tendring Women’s Refuge! That’s the amount of money that has been handed over by the Women of Wivenhoe group, following a charity 5km event in the town in March. Women of Wivenhoe (WOW) were set up to work together to create a safe, open place for women to share, express and voice concerns. They only fundraise locally and for specific projects that create positive change for women in North Essex. When they heard that the refuge was running an appeal to replace its Variety Club mini bus they decided to organise the fundraising day which started from the Station Pub, which supports all their activities. Participants, including young children, walked, jogged and ran the 5km.  Afterwards the group organised a cake sale, a raffle and an auction to boost the funds. The minibus is used by our children’s department but is now 14 years old and getting to the end of its life. We have set  appeal target of £10,000 of which to date £4,000 has been raised.  Once that target is hit the variety club will find a sponsor for the rest. With members of WOW handing over a cheque for £1250 on April 7, with another £250 to follow, our target is over half way there. The mini bus appeal is also being supported by Colchester and District Soroptimist Club and the London Anglia region.
